How can I get my jade plant to grow straight?

When rooting a Jade cutting (stem or leaf), what is the best rooting medium and should it be completely dry?

Then I placed them into a Cactus and Soil mix directly out of the bag and placed in a bright but sun-less window. Two weeks in I sprayed the top of the soil a few times of each one and one of them rotted from the cut on up within a week. The other one has been in the soil for over a month now and no sign of roots, meanwhile the cutting is slowly shriveling up. I feel like it needs a small amount of moisture, but I am afraid it will rot. any ideas? I really want this cutting to survive as it has a striking stem and branch shape.

They’re a little smaller than the size of a pencil eraser. I read somewhere jade seeds are very fine and look like dust. (definitely not what this looks like) What is it? And should I try and remove all of them from the roots? (The plant is not doing too well, and I’m wondering if these things are partially to blame.)
