what is the meaning of the Asian red cord necklaces? What does the red cord mean?

i ask this because i’m asian, and i gave my incredibly caucasian boyfriend a jade pendant on a red string. i wore it when i was very young–4th grade till 8th grade. but the thing is, other asians (particularly females) have been gesturing towards my boyfriend and talking/giggling at him whenever he wears it. so i’m thinking, since the red cording is all that shows when the necklace is tucked in his shirt, it must *mean* something–i’m just not sure what. >.>
